Following the Prophet ﷺ: A Model for Today’s Youth

The example and model of the Prophet ﷺ are especially important for today’s youth—particularly in this blessed month, which carries deep historical significance as the month of his birth. It is a time of remembrance, reflection, and an opportunity to strengthen one’s bond with the Seerah in a meaningful way.

Allah ﷻ commands believers clearly in the Qur’an to follow the Prophet ﷺ:

  • Taking him as the model:

  • “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” (Al-Ahzab 33:21)

  • Proof of true love for Allah through following him:
“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.’” (Āl ʿImrān 3:31)

  • Obeying his commands and avoiding what he prohibited:
“Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you from, abstain from it.” (Al-Hashr 59:7)

Not only are we commanded to follow him, but Allah ﷻ Himself praised the Prophet ﷺ’s character:

  • His exalted character:
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” (Al-Qalam 68:4)

  • His mercy and gentleness with people:
“So by mercy from Allah, you were gentle with them. And if you had been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:159)

  • His role as a source of guidance and light:
“O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as an illuminating lamp.” (Al-Ahzab 33:45–46)

Lessons for Today’s Youth

Across communities, leaders and mentors encourage young people to immerse themselves in the Seerah—studying his character, his mercy, his wisdom, and the decision-making strategies he employed, especially in Madinah. This period of his life offers timeless lessons in perseverance, patience, and community-building, closely resembling many challenges Muslims face today.

By learning from him, youth can:

  • Build resilient and faithful communities.

  • Remain steadfast in belief despite trials.

  • Carry themselves with integrity, mercy, and patience.

  • Become active, productive, and positive contributors to society.

Insha’Allah, by revisiting the Seerah with sincerity and following the example of the Prophet ﷺ, today’s youth will grow to be firmly rooted in their faith, confident in their identity, and inspired to make a lasting impact on the world around them.
